Ten Little Fireflies is a 20-page board book, so as you might imagine, there are two panels that count down from ten to one. Each page begins with the number (Ten! Nine! etc.), followed by a four-line abcb rhyme that says something about the fireflies. The rhyme scheme is such that the b-line rhymes with the next number (e.g. line/nine, gate/eight). The a-line also ends with an action word in all-caps (e.g. FLASH, BEAM, SPARK). It’s a book that you have to read in a certain rhythm and cadence or else it just feels awkward. The poetic scheme works in general, but some of the word choices and structure that Gruelle makes to fit the scheme is not always the most natural.
This is a beautiful counting book that’s good to look at. The illustrations are bright, the fireflies stand out and are easily noticed. The background is richly detailed without taking away from the foreground. Gabi Murphy does a great job calling attention to what needs to be the focus without skimping on the background, meaning that kids will have several readthroughs and still be noticing new things.
It’s a cute little bedtime book that helps teaching counting, recognizing groups of things, and also recognizing discrete items. My kids love it!
